Homemade Garlic Bread
This is a delicious recipe for homemade garlic bread that uses a pizza-base dough. It goes great with pizza and coleslaw.
The pizza dough is left to rise on the baking tray. It’s then cooked straight away. This makes the bread fat and airy – more like normal bread than a pizza base.
As a short-cut you can use pitta bread instead of dough, but your garlic bread won’t be truly ‘homemade’!
Ingredients
A ball of pizza dough (about the size of an orange is ideal)
A few cloves of garlic
50 grams of butter
Black pepper
Olive oil or butter to grease the baking tray
Equipment
A sharp knife and a chopping board, or a garlic crusher
A baking tray
A small pan
A wooden spoon
How to make your Homemade Garlic Bread
1. Pre-heat the oven to 210C / Gas 7.
2. Shape the dough into a rectangle on your baking tray. Put it in a warm – but not hot – place to let the dough rise to twice its original size. This should take about half an hour.
3. When it’s risen enough put it in the oven and bake it for about ten minutes, until it is brown and crispy on top. Take it out using oven gloves.
4. In the meantime, prepare the garlic, chop it up after you’ve peeled it.
5. Whilst the bread is cooling a little, melt the butter over a low heat – you don’t want it to burn, just melt. Add the garlic to the melted butter and stir.
6. Put the bread onto a plate. This is the best bit: use a knife to ‘score’ the bread a few times (this means cut into the bread, being careful not to cut all the way through it).
7. Finally, pour the garlic butter over the bread. The melted, garlicky butter will now soak into the cuts and into your bread. Tasty. If you like, finish by grinding some black pepper over the top.
